The RNLI Helvick lifeboat station is on track to host the highly anticipated 28th Annual RNLI Helvick Swim & BBQ, scheduled to take place on Sunday, the 27th of August at 1:00 pm. This iconic annual event at the lifeboat station on Helvick Pier features a variety of family-friendly activities which have proved popular with the local community for many years.
Around 100 swimmers arrive at Helvick Pier, greeted by a cheering crowd, after successfully completing either a 4km or 2km open water challenge. They are accompanied by a team of support volunteers in kayaks and ribs.
Instead of a sign-up fee, swimmers are requested to raise funds for the event by accepting sponsorship from their own network. The proceeds from the annual event maintain Helvick’s reputation as one of the best-supported RNLI stations.
“After the unfortunate postponement of our original July date, we’re hoping that the community is still eager to come support us on Sunday the 27th,” said Kevin O’Morchoe, Honorary Chairman of the RNLI Helvick Head Fundraising Committee. “With the spectacle of open water swimmers crossing Dungarvan Bay, and cookout atmosphere – the excitement of the day is very unique. To be so well supported by the local community after all these years, while raising vital funds for the lifeboats, is something that everyone can be enormously proud of.”
Highlights of the Event:
Thrilling Swim Challenge: Brave and determined swimmers will take to the water at 1:30pm, embarking on a challenging open water swim across Dungarvan Bay to Helvick Pier. Come and witness their incredible determination as they complete the long swim and make a triumphant arrival at the pier.
Dog Show: There will be a dog show at 3:30pm with prizes for the selected dogs.
King & Queen of Helvick Competition: The event will also feature the prestigious “King & Queen of Helvick” competition, where participants will compete in an exciting series of challenges to claim the crown. Who will emerge as the ultimate King and Queen of Helvick this year?
Musical Delight: Get ready to tap your feet to the tunes of the Dungarvan Brass Band, who will be treating us to lively melodies .
