After three earlier postponements due to poor sea conditions, the 30th Annual RNLI Helvick Swim is finally set to go ahead on Sunday, 31st August, bringing swimmers, volunteers, and supporters together for the station’s biggest fundraising event of the year.
More than 100 swimmers are expected to take to the waters of Dungarvan Bay, tackling either the 4km crossing from Ballinacourty Point or the shorter 2km route. The spectacle of swimmers stretching across the bay will be supported by a flotilla of kayaks and RIBs, including The Robert Armstrong, RNLI Helvick’s B Class Atlantic lifeboat, ensuring safety throughout the event.
The Helvick Swim is the lifeboat station’s main annual fundraiser, with all proceeds going directly to the RNLI’s lifesaving operations. Instead of a sign-up fee, participants are encouraged to raise funds through sponsorship from family, friends, and colleagues.
Onshore festivities at Helvick Pier promise plenty for supporters and spectators to enjoy, including:
- A lively BBQ burger cookout
- Raffle with great local prizes
- The popular King & Queen of Helvick competition
- A Dog Show for four-legged entrants
- Stalls offering RNLI souvenirs
Kevin O’Morchoe, Hon. RNLI Helvick Swim Committee Chairman said:
“This year’s swim has certainly tested our patience, but after three weather cancellations we are looking forward to what promises to be a memorable day. The event is a real highlight for the community — it raises vital funds for our lifeboat service and creates a fantastic day for everyone at the pier. We are grateful to every swimmer, sponsor, and supporter who helps keep our volunteers ready to launch when needed most.”
The public is warmly invited to join in the celebrations on Helvick pier on Sunday, 31st August from 11am onwards and show their support.
